Topic- Race for the Arctic

Title- Meltdown; Where is the US in the Race for the Arctic- NBC News

Source- NBC News

Summary- Melting ice in the Arctic is giving the world more opportunities to explore the region. There are many, many resources to be taken advantage of, a lot of land for troops to reside, and a way to shorten shipping routes. Many officials are calling the Arctic the, “last frontiers left in the world.” With all of the good things coming from it, the only problem is that the US is way behind Russia in the race to claim the land.

Reaction- I think that the US should get more involved in the race for the Arctic. If we gain even part of the land, shipping routes would be shortened a 30 percent cheaper shipping rate, we would gain lots of natural treasures, such as oil, gas, and fish , and there would be a possibility of us getting our energy from the Arctic as well. Russia has 10 icebreaker ships, and the US only has 2 to explore with, so we are getting behind in that part as well. Though they cost 1 billion dollars to make, I think that would be a smart thing for us to do because of all the benefits we would receive from the Arctic. The only way that this would involve me is that, as I mentioned earlier, prices would be lowered everywhere.

World Impact- Overall this issue does impact the world. Afterall, it is the race of different countries to claim the land. The main countries it would affect are, the US, Russia, China, and Canada. If the US was to join the race to claim the land, our conflicts with Russia would be brought back up, seeing as they are also intent on getting Arctic land. Also, our rivalry with China would certainly heat back up again. The main reason this has anything to do with Canada is because how close they are.
