5 Guys and Ice Baths

After a hard driven practice of running what seems like a million miles, Dylan Harris, Michael Laughlin, Garrett Stephenson, Thomas Herndon, and Zach Herring receive a cold rush of ice water from their cross-country coach, Coach Hutchins Boyett. Ice baths come in handy when your muscles need to be relaxed and released of the agonizing pains. The boys had to run no telling how many miles and were definitely building up pain in the their muscles. Coach Hutchins explains the importance of ice bath’s because they “help relieve muscle soreness and fatigue in the runner’s legs,” and because of that, the runners take ice baths twice a week.

bitmap-a representation in which each item corresponds to one or more bits of information, especially the information used to control the display of a computer screen.

exposure-the amount of light per unit area

tiff-a computer file format for storing raster graphics images, popular among graphic artists, the publishing industry, and both amateur and professional photographers in general. The format was originally created by the company Aldus for use in desktop publishing.

png- a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression.

White balance- the process of removing unrealistic color casts, so that objects which appear white in person are rendered white in your photo.

Histogram- A diagram consisting of rectangles whose area is proportional to the frequency of a variable and whose width is equal to the class interval.

Aperture- A device that controls the amount of light admitted through an opening. In photography and digital photography, aperture is the unit of measurement that defines the size of the opening in the lens that can be adjusted to control the amount of light reaching the film or digital sensor.

Shutter speed-exposure time is the length of time when the film or digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light, also when a camera’s shutter is open when taking a photograph.

Depth of field-focus range or effective focus range, is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image

Aperture priority-on a camera mode dial, is a setting on some cameras that allows the user to choose a specific aperture value while the camera selects a shutter speed to match, thereby ensuring proper exposure.

Shutter priority-a setting on some cameras that allows the user to choose a specific shutter speed while the camera adjusts the aperture to ensure correct exposure.

Bitmap- A representation in which each item corresponds to one or more bits of information. The information is used to control the display on a computer screen.

Exposure-a tool to create beautiful photo narratives

Watermarking- originally faint imprints on paper that could only be seen at a specific angle. This process was designed to prevent counterfeiting and is still used today.

optical zoom-on a digital camera, optical zoom is a true zoom feature. It allows you to zoom in (or out) on the subject in the LCD or viewfinder. This will enable you to get a closer view of the subject before taking your picture.

digital zoom- Digital zoom is a method of decreasing the apparent angle of view of a digital photographic or video image. Digital zoom is usually accomplished by scaling portion of the image data (usually center) to have same aspect ratio as well as pixel dimensions compared to the original image.

bracketing- the general technique of taking several shots of the same subject using different camera settings

light meter-An instrument for measuring the intensity of light, used chiefly when showing the correct exposure in photography.

image stabilization- a family of techniques used to reduce blurring associated with the motion of a camera or other imaging device during exposure.

lag time, the period of time between two closely related events, phenomena, etc., as between stimulus and response or between cause and effect: a time-lag between the declaration of war and full war production. Origin of time-lag Expand

hot shoe, A hot shoe is a mounting point on the top of a camera to attach a flash unit and other compatible accessories.

fisheye being, having, or produced by a wide-angle photographic lens that has a highly curved protruding front, that covers an angle of about 180 degrees, and that gives a circular image
macro- short for macro lens

telephoto-a lens with a longer focal length than standard, giving a narrow field of view and a magnified image.

wide angle- In photography and cinematography, a wide-angle lens refers to a lens whose focal length is substantially smaller than the focal length of a normal lens for a given film plane.

DSLR- A digital single-lens reflex camera (also called a digital SLR or DSLR) is a digital camera combining the optics and the mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera with a digital imaging sensor, as opposed to photographic film.

dynamic range-the range of acceptable or possible volumes of sound occurring in the course of a piece of music or a performance. The ratio of the largest to the smallest intensity of sound that can be reliably transmitted or reproduced by a particular sound system, measured in decibels.

digital negative- open lossless raw image format written by Adobe used for digital photography

exposure compensation- is a technique for adjusting the exposure indicated by a photographic exposure meter, in consideration of factors that may cause the indicated exposure to result in a less-than-optimal image.

Title- The Train that Powers its Station

Topic- London Money Saving Experiment

Source- BBC News

Summary- There is an experiment going on in underground in London. There is a five week system testing how much money is being saved by getting energy from the Tube when it stops. The results of the experiment shows that they can save up to 9 million dollars and for each week of the 5 week test, they created a full megawatt hour which is enough to power a hundred homes for a year.

Reaction- I think this is a creative thing they thought of to save money. With the experiment being pretty successful so far by saving lots, and keeping the tunnel cooler, doing it in other places could help save money there as well. If I was to ever move to a big city like New York, Philadelphia, or Boston, and they adapted the money saving idea too, I could benefit from the money saved.

World Impact- Right now, this is just something going on in London, but it has helped them so much that maybe they’ll let other cities adopt their idea as well. This could start to save many other places money too. I think this is a good method that obviously helps, so I think it would be neat if we saw the method used all over at the places with underground rail systems.

Title- Confusion, Horror, and Heroism in Oregon Shooting

Topic- Shooting at Oregon Community College

Source- New York Times

Summary- On Thursday, October 1st, a gunman went into a classroom at Umpqua Community College. Ironically, on the schools website it states how the college is a safe and peaceful place to go. The shooter, a 26 year old student, first shot his teacher. By the information some witnesses provided, he was targeting Christians. In the end he killed 9, and injured 9 others.

Reaction- I think it is outrageous how many shootings are going on in America. Its bad when you can’t feel safe to go to class, church, or even the mall. I don’t understand why someone would take so many lives, and injure so many others, just to turn around and cowardly take his own life. This issue is going on at a national scale, but is getting out of hand in America.

World Impact- This specifically talks about the US, but is an issue almost everywhere. Why should someone pull a gun on you because you are a certain religion? Why should someone pull a gun on you because they don’t like a school you attend? There is no reason that people need to feel like they are in danger any time they leave their house. Anywhere with gun violence needs to figure out a way to control it, because we should not be hearing so many stories on the news about the innocent people losing their lives for it.

Title- Europe seeks unified response to unprecedented migration crisis

Topic- Migration

Source-CNN News

Summary- A wave of refugees are flooding into Europe, specifically Germany. The chancellor of Germany spoke out and said that it’s okay for them to be coming to their country, but they need to assimilate into society, respect the government, and learn German. Help is need from the United Nations, and also aid is needed to help feed all of the people coming into the area.

Reaction- I think it is good that the chancellor of Germany is so willing to take these refugees into his country. I also agree to the fact that they are going to need help with supplying all the things that these people need, and that the UN would be a good help with that. Overall, this issue doesn’t really affect me, basically just the people in Europe and the people migrating there. I think they deserve to be helped with their situation if the Germans are willing to take them in.

World Impact- This doesn’t affect the whole world, more of just the European countries. It involves Germany a lot because that is where the people are migrating to. Also this involves the United Nations, and I think they should help because they could make a difference. They could help save many lives with economic support.

Topic- Race for the Arctic

Title- Meltdown; Where is the US in the Race for the Arctic- NBC News

Source- NBC News

Summary- Melting ice in the Arctic is giving the world more opportunities to explore the region. There are many, many resources to be taken advantage of, a lot of land for troops to reside, and a way to shorten shipping routes. Many officials are calling the Arctic the, “last frontiers left in the world.” With all of the good things coming from it, the only problem is that the US is way behind Russia in the race to claim the land.

Reaction- I think that the US should get more involved in the race for the Arctic. If we gain even part of the land, shipping routes would be shortened a 30 percent cheaper shipping rate, we would gain lots of natural treasures, such as oil, gas, and fish , and there would be a possibility of us getting our energy from the Arctic as well. Russia has 10 icebreaker ships, and the US only has 2 to explore with, so we are getting behind in that part as well. Though they cost 1 billion dollars to make, I think that would be a smart thing for us to do because of all the benefits we would receive from the Arctic. The only way that this would involve me is that, as I mentioned earlier, prices would be lowered everywhere.

World Impact- Overall this issue does impact the world. Afterall, it is the race of different countries to claim the land. The main countries it would affect are, the US, Russia, China, and Canada. If the US was to join the race to claim the land, our conflicts with Russia would be brought back up, seeing as they are also intent on getting Arctic land. Also, our rivalry with China would certainly heat back up again. The main reason this has anything to do with Canada is because how close they are.

Title- UN: Gaza Could Be Uninhabitable by 2020 If Trends Continue

Topic- Gaza’s economic struggles

Source- ABC News

Summary- According to a new report by the United Nations, many think that Gaza could be uninhabitable in less than 5 years. They came to this conclusion because of how bad their current economic situation is. Gaza has been on an economic blockade for 10 years and has been in three wars recently. These wars left parts of Gaza destroyed and eliminated their middle class. With how bad their economy is, Gaza could destroy themselves completely.

Reaction- On this topic, there isn’t really a side to take. I think that Gaza needs to get a hold of and get help from others to get back on track. I feel like Gaza needs help from others so that their country isn’t soon completely uninhabitable. This doesn’t affect me at all really, just citizens of Gaza, and maybe surrounding countries or others, that could help them pick their economy back up. Gaza needs to work on eliminating their economic blockades and avoid new wars if possible.
World Impact: This problem doesn’t affect the whole world. It affects Gaza, the United Nations countries that wrote the report, and countries that could get rid of their economic blockades with Gaza. With there being a possibility of Gaza being uninhabitable by the year 2020, other countries should help them avoid self destruction. UN countries could also lend a helping hand to Gaza since they were the ones that came out with the report.
